Hello all!
mary rosenblum
Happy 'almost' New Year!
mary rosenblum
This is our After Hours Forum,
with me, Mary Rosenblum, your web editor. We’re talking about your writing
resolutions this evening. I’ve published seven novels (number eight will be
out next year) , more than 60 short stories, and will do my best to answer
any questions you have. (and MY resolution is to read more of my towering
‘to read’ pile!) If you’re new here, remember that you need to click on the
‘Ask a Question’ button or the ‘word bubble’ next to the red question mark
at the top of the screen in order to ask a question. Your regular ‘send’
bar won’t reach me! Or you can use /ask and type your question into the
regular send bar if that works better for you..
mary rosenblum
I thought this would be a good
night to talk about goals for the coming year.
mary rosenblum
Are they realistic?
mary rosenblum
Are they doable?
mary rosenblum
I always see those writing
resolutions as a double edged sword...
mary rosenblum
if you do not keep them...then
you feel like a failure right off the bat!
mary rosenblum
Before you get the rejection
letters!
geezer
My goal is to get paid!
mary rosenblum
That should be doable
geeze....as long as you're not saying you want to get paid for writing what
YOU want to write! :-)
mary rosenblum
Actually, that is a huge
boundary line that novices really don't see.
mary rosenblum
It is not hard to get paid for
writing.
mary rosenblum
It is not impossible to make a
living from your writing.
mary rosenblum
It is much harder to get paid
for writing what YOU want to write.
mary rosenblum
It is VERY difficult to make a
living writing only what you want to write.
wolf122
My goal is to increase my
writing from 920 words/day to 1000/day, and get three short stories
published. . .
mary rosenblum
Wow, wolf. 1000 words a day is
four pages, and that's about 1400 pages a year...
mary rosenblum
lesse that's three novels! :-)
mary rosenblum
Give yourself a break on
publishing three short stories. Remember that you have to find the
editor...
mary rosenblum
who likes THIS story, and
given the horrible turnaround time from most markets...
mary rosenblum
that can take a long time if
you have to send the story to four or five editors before you sell it!
spider
For a fiction lover, are you
saying that it would be more lucrative to write nonfiction?
mary rosenblum
IN general yes, spider. If
your goal is to make money, don't do fiction.
mary rosenblum
If you are LUCKY, you'll be
the next Rowling or Grissham or King.
mary rosenblum
If you are not lucky you'll
make a pittance and not enough to live on.
mary rosenblum
But nonfiction mags NEED good
freelancers.
mary rosenblum
It's a much more reliable 'day
job'.
mary rosenblum
AND it pays much better!
mary rosenblum
Think 1 per word or more
versus 5 cents per word!
andi
mine is to do better at my
writing
mary rosenblum
Ah, that's a very doable goal,
andi, good for you!
mary rosenblum
When you read something that
really moves you...analyze it.
mary rosenblum
Copy it!
mary rosenblum
There's nothing wrong with
copying another writer's style and voice.
mary rosenblum
Don't worry. You'll evolve
your own...but like training wheels on a bike, it can help you get the feel
for 'how to do it'.
info
my goal is to finish at least
one novel
mary rosenblum
ah, take a leaf from nano,
info. Set yourself a reasonable goal. One page a day...250 words...is 365
pages in a year.
mary rosenblum
That' s a good sized novel.
lapart
my goal is to collect all the
scrap paper with my ideas/note
mary rosenblum
Good for you, lapart!
mary rosenblum
I throw all mine into a box in
the closet. Every so often I dump it out on the floor, sit down and sort
through it. I nearly always end up with a new story.
mary rosenblum
I call it the 'dump box'.
megger
I'm just hoping to get my
assignments finished on time and write more, whether it's handwritten
letters to friends, paragraphs into my journal or a chapter into an
historic novel.
mary rosenblum
Good goal, meg! YOu know what
the key is? Respecting your work.
mary rosenblum
It's really easy to say
"I have to vacuum, I have to make dinner, I should weed the garden, I
should....
mary rosenblum
YOu need to say, I should, but
I need to finish this...there's canned soup and cheese kids, how about you
make...
mary rosenblum
soup and grilled cheese
sandwiches and call me when they're done.
mary rosenblum
It's hard...VERY hard...to put
your writing before those 'I should' things ,...especially when you haven't
sold yet.
mary rosenblum
But you really need to.
mary rosenblum
If you don't think your work
is important enough to preempt those other tasks...
mary rosenblum
your lack of confidence shows
in your writing.
mary rosenblum
No matter what anyone else in
your life says, YOU have to believe in your work. Only YOU know what's
inside your head and what you can produce.

info
I thought most readers don't
like copycats
mary rosenblum
ah, info, I didn't mean to
copy another writer and send it out.
mary rosenblum
Copy another writer to see if
you can do as well.
mary rosenblum
Realize that you should write
at times just to write.
mary rosenblum
I still do that.
mary rosenblum
I write scenes just to see if
I can get a certain effect...
mary rosenblum
or a short short that fits NO
genre just to try it.
mary rosenblum
I may never submit some of
those bits anywhere.
megger
Yeah, that and using less
passive voice! LOL>
mary rosenblum
Ah, that should be easy,
Megger. I'll just nag you a lot, heheh.

question from antillean - How
does one strike a sensible balance between satisfaction and profitability
in the writing business?
mary rosenblum
Good question, antillean!
mary rosenblum
This is a dilemma every writer
faces if you want to make a living with your words.
mary rosenblum
You have to decide what your
priorities are.
mary rosenblum
Most of us write what we love
and don't make much money at it.
mary rosenblum
We fill in that gap by either
writing work that pays, but isn't what we love...
mary rosenblum
or doing something like
teaching...like I do for Long Ridge.
mary rosenblum
I love teaching and would
rather do that than write nonfiction freelance or do fiction work for hire.

on the Dec. 21 solstice I
boasted about making a good mutton soup, so maybe I've fulfilled my goal to
be successful for the year
janecj333
I've just finished a third short
story since September. I'm on a roll, and the computer, even tho it doesn't
really want to, is mostly cooperating
mary rosenblum
OOh, congrats on good mutton
soup! And where DID you buy mutton. Mostly you have to grow it to get it in
this country!
mary rosenblum
And congrats on the three
stories! Have you sent them off yet???? Nudge nudge.
sweett
My goal last year was to write
at least one sentence each day. This also meant if I plotted but didn't
write anything down, I met my goal. It worked for me!!
mary rosenblum
That's pretty much the way I
work, sweett, and I think it's a good system.
mary rosenblum
Writing is more ...way
more...than sitting at the computer and typing words.
mary rosenblum
It's plotting, creating
characters, revising, revising, doing PR stuff...
mary rosenblum
That all counts.
geezer
There was a whole section of
mutton at Sam's Club
mary rosenblum
Really? Must be a widening
market for it. No wonder the price of older sheep has been going up. LOL
andi
my worst problem is the games on
the internet.
mary rosenblum
ah, no kidding andi. That is
why you'll find NO games on my computer. They are dangerous. :-)
janecj333
they have mutton at Tacoma Boys,
one story is 'in process' as they say (waiting to be read)at GlimmerTrain,
one hoping to be in an upcoming anthology if I can wrestle an invitation
from the editor :)
mary rosenblum
Good luck! Which antho is it?
tory
I find when I write articles and
short stories, I can keep my confidence up. Guess it's the satisfaction of
finishing, then submitting. But on the novel--whoa--it's easy to let the
doubt vultures creep in!
mary rosenblum
It really is, tory.
mary rosenblum
Novel is a marathon compared
to the sprint of the short story.
mary rosenblum
I usually manage it by
determinedly NOT thinking about the long term future of the novel...
mary rosenblum
and focusing on the characters
and universe instead.
mary rosenblum
Once I have immersed myself in
their world, it's easier not to think marketing thoughts!
janecj333
ok, it was really lamb, but when
the guy at Tacoma Boys brought out the four foot long frozen mutton leg I
just couldn't ask him to saw off a five pound piece...he'd think I was
crazy
mary rosenblum
LOL...yep, that was mutton for
sure!
info
how do you handle something on
the lines of writers block, you are in the mood to write but the ideas
aren't coming no matter what you do? I tried forgetting writing to doing
housework and nothing is working
mary rosenblum
That's tough, info. Been there
many times...tried many things.
mary rosenblum
Essentially, I find that the
only answer is to just write.
mary rosenblum
It will feel like dreck. Do it
anyway. Just put the words down...
mary rosenblum
tell yourself you aren't going
to sell them, they're awful, whatever mood you are in.
mary rosenblum
But do it.
mary rosenblum
When that mood lifts, you'll
probably find that they're pretty good words.
mary rosenblum
And you've improved your
writing by doing them, even if you hated every syllable.
mary rosenblum
Remember....you do NOT need to
plan on publishing every word you write.
mary rosenblum
I do hot love scenes when I'm
just not in the mood to really work.
mary rosenblum
They're fun, I get bored after
awhile, and get back to work.
janecj333
Mary, it's the Polaris, by Julie
Czerneda...hoping to contact her again after Jan. 1
mary rosenblum
Oh, good luck with that.
mary rosenblum
I hopeyou make it in.
acook
my problem is the whole
submission process
mary rosenblum
Most of us HATE the marketing
process, acook.
mary rosenblum
It's depressing, you feel as
if you're waiting to be judged when you're just starting out...
mary rosenblum
and even when you know how the
process works, you're still waiting for that acceptance/rejeciton thing.
acook
I've not been able to submit
anything
mary rosenblum
Ah, there's a resolution you
can keep, acook.
mary rosenblum
Pick something you've done.
Decide on a market...any reasonable market.
mary rosenblum
Get out the envelope.
mary rosenblum
Address it.
mary rosenblum
Do the cover letter.
mary rosenblum
Here's my story, I hope you
enjoy it.
mary rosenblum
Here's my article, I hope it
works for you.
mary rosenblum
PUt it into the envelope and
send it off.
mary rosenblum
Because you had to really
struggle with this, you probably didn't do a really good job of choosing
the right market...
mary rosenblum
and you'll probably get a
rejection. And sometimes that is the best thing.
mary rosenblum
You sent it out. You got the
rejection.
mary rosenblum
The world did not end...well
it might feel that way for a bit, but it's still there.
mary rosenblum
And while it was in the mail,
YOU were choosing at least two other markets.
mary rosenblum
And if you get it back, you
have the next envelope addressed, the next cover letter signed and waiting.
mary rosenblum
And...the really important
part of this...you are working on a new project.
lapart
Mary, what areas do you advise
us to perfect in writing?
mary rosenblum
Characterization first and
foremost.
mary rosenblum
Very few writers do really
really good characterization.
mary rosenblum
If you do...your bases are
covered.
mary rosenblum
Your plot can be weak, your
language not literary and stunning...
mary rosenblum
but by golly if your readers
care about your characters...you will sell and succeed.

I would focus on that the
most.
janecj333
I don't know which is worse:
submitting work for 12 years with a single paid acceptance, or not
submitting work until it's professional quality and getting no feedback for
12 years. I might trade one for the other if I had it to do again
mary rosenblum
Not submitting work won't get
you there, jane.
mary rosenblum
How do you know it's
professional quality? You, me, we're all the worst judges of our own work's
quality.

mary rosenblum

AND...editors look for
regulars.
mary rosenblum

They are not ogres.
mary rosenblum

They care about passionate
writers.
mary rosenblum

They share the same
passion...in a different form.
mary rosenblum

The more editors see from a

They recognize the fire in the

Donald Maass says an author's
27th (I think that was it) novel is the lucrative one
mary rosenblum
Donald Mass made up that
number, Jane. Yes, he did. :-)
mary rosenblum
But what he is saying is that
you rarely make money early in your career...and that is serious truth.
mary rosenblum
Now there are
exceptions...Harry Potter is one.
mary rosenblum
But they are rare.
mary rosenblum
Writing is rarely rarely
rarely a get rich quick lifestyle.
mary rosenblum
It's more akin to a heroin
addiction.
mary rosenblum
You just keep doing it because
you can't NOT do it.
mary rosenblum
And eventually, if you're
lucky, you make money at it.
mary rosenblum
And if it's not much money or
not enough money you STILL do it.
lapart

as a novice writer can influence

Very much so lapart!

Life is, of course, full of

How do you submit a published
novel for a screenplay?
mary rosenblum
YOu have to know someone in
hollywood, mad...or get a hollywood agent.
mary rosenblum
Usually, they ask YOU for the
novel option.
mary rosenblum
But if you have inside
connections in Hollywood and you think a particular producer or directer
might like it, you can get it to that person...
mary rosenblum

through your connection.
mary rosenblum

Everything is VERY inside only
in Hollywood.
lapart

what could a writer write
impartially/ bias in nonfiction?
mary rosenblum
I'm not quite sure what you're
asking, lapart?
lapart
as far as writing our own
opinion
mary rosenblum

Oh...okay..that's what I
thought.
mary rosenblum

Nonfiction has it's own sub
genres, lapart.
mary rosenblum

YOu have informative
articles...those are very objective and without personal bias.
mary rosenblum
And you have personal opinion
pieces and personal narrative.
mary rosenblum
Those are entirely biased!
mary rosenblum
They are the writer's opinion
first and foremost.
mary rosenblum
Depends on what you are
writing for whom.
geezer

There are some reallly awful
movies out there while I have read some very good novels. Why does
Hollywood waste their time with bad stuff?
mary rosenblum

sigh...two words geeze....THEY
SELL.
mary rosenblum

Hollywood has its own idea of
what the market wants and they just don't take risks with 50 mil in
production costs.

If you haven' t
heard...microsoft just discovered it has a gaping holes in everything from
Windows 98 on.
mary rosenblum
If you so much as open an
email or look at an image on a website with your browser that is infected
with a certain virus...
mary rosenblum
your computer now has a nice
open door for a hacker.
mary rosenblum
MS does not have a fix yet,
and the only way to avoid it is if your virus checker/firewall is up to
date.
mary rosenblum
so if it is NOT , do it!
mary rosenblum
Now!
mary rosenblum
It does not affect linux or
apple, by the way.
mary rosenblum
firefox and netscape will not
save you from it. alas.
tory
That's upsetting. Just last week
I called customer service about a TON of junk mail I was getting. They told
me to open it and send them the routing info. Now I have an open door!
mary rosenblum
Maybe not, tory.

mary rosenblum

It comes through an image and
it's very new.

I haven't heard a name yet.

But apparently the
virus/firewalls have its number.
mary rosenblum

If you have a regularly
updated Norton or Symantec you should be fine.

tried to update my virus

but you are also protected by
the white noise factor...
mary rosenblum

millions of users out there.

YOu need to have good virus
protection, be cautious and wise...never click on an attachment unless you

mary rosenblum

And take the risk.

mary rosenblum

It is an amazing window on the

.txt are safest but a pain to
format.

Some Internet providers will
delet messages or pictures with a virus in them. I have Earthlink, which
does this automatically.
mary rosenblum
The big name servers do that.

It's good to turn the power off
to the computer when its off too.

mary rosenblum

Tha'ts the only way it's
really OFF geeze.

tory

does that OFF protect against
hackers?
mary rosenblum

No. Unplugged does. That's
all.

Turn off your surge protector.

I think hackers would hate my

LOL they'll leave you alone,

What one piece of New Year's
advice would you pass on?
mary rosenblum
Mad, my one piece of
advice...and it's a hard one to follow...
mary rosenblum
is to believe in yourself.
mary rosenblum
That is the key to keeping on
in the face of rejections, poor sales, all the stuff that will afflict you.
mary rosenblum
It will falter at times, but
hang onto it. Don't let it die.

Sometimes we seem to imprudently
risk our own time/energies/futures so we can have a bigger, faster
electronic toy ... yesterday. I don't think we'll ever catch up completely.
Sad but often good for stories.
mary rosenblum
Ah, how true!
mary rosenblum
You really need to examine
your priorities at times.

Or you can use /ask and type your question into the
regular send bar if that works better for you..

lapart
dont write for money, write
because its your passion
mary rosenblum
Write first and foremost what
matters to you, lapart.
mary rosenblum
If you write something that
you know is good, you have succeeded...
mary rosenblum
whether it is even published
or not.
mary rosenblum
Write for money if you want to
do it and can do it, but that's a lousy primary goal.
mary rosenblum
YOu're better off being a
plumber, believe me.
mary rosenblum
Better benefits!
mary rosenblum
I have a resolution for you
all.
mary rosenblum
It's one I've kept since I
started writing seriously, way back in 88..
mary rosenblum
Do something with writing
every day.
mary rosenblum
It may be plotting.
mary rosenblum
Building a character.
mary rosenblum
Writing 20 pages.
mary rosenblum
writing one sentence.
mary rosenblum
Studying the markets.
mary rosenblum
You can succeed at that. Every
day.
mary rosenblum
Even if you don't have a
pencil and paper handy.
mary rosenblum
As to the writing for money/
for yourself...
mary rosenblum
You CAN write for money and
succeed quite nicely.
mary rosenblum
But remember.
mary rosenblum
Writing for money and writing
what you WANT to write for money...
mary rosenblum
are totally different animals.
mary rosenblum
Anyone else want to share
resolutions? :-)
geezer
Oh, for a check for even five
cents! It would get the in-laws off my back!
mary rosenblum
Work on nonficiton, geeze.
mary rosenblum
Tons of editors WANT you!
janecj333
can we be resolute without
having resolutions?
mary rosenblum
Being resolute is always good.
:-)

I decided to make goals this
year instead of resolutions. wrote them on dry erase board
mary rosenblum
goals are good.
mary rosenblum
REsolutions are double edged
swords, as I said at the beginning.
paminnapa
get rejected, get published,
finish my nano novel, and write at least an hour a day...
mary rosenblum
Yikes, pam, give yourself a
break! LOL...how about get rejected. That means you're sending lots of
stuff off.
mary rosenblum
You can't sell EVERYTHING.
info
usually I don't make
resolutions, but do try to keep the keep on writing resolution
greenfaile
to actively seek publication by
submitting one of something, each week this year. minimum.
mary rosenblum
If you've got enough stuff to
do every week, green...but regular submission is a great goal.
mary rosenblum
So many promising new writers
just don't do it!
spider
That's good sweett. My goals are
inside a clipboard that opens to store work. Every time I open it, I see
them.
paja
...and sub one at least.
mary rosenblum
I hope you submit more than
one, paja!
mary rosenblum
Just beware all of you of
trying too hard for quantity.
mary rosenblum
Remember that quality matters
more.
mary rosenblum
Better you should take more
time, think about things, make lots of changes as your characters and their
interactions grow and change...
mary rosenblum
than churn out something
quickly and whip it out the door.
greenfaile
I've been saving a lot Mary
*laughs* I'm a timid submitter.
mary rosenblum
Oooh...now there's a good
resolution indeed...submit all the stuff you haven't been submitting.
mary rosenblum
And FLAUNT any rejections you
get.
mary rosenblum
How many do most aspiring
writers get? None. They never finish and send work out
paja
Would three books a year be too
much then/
mary rosenblum
I wouldn't try that many,
paja.
mary rosenblum
You can do it, timewise, if
you don't have a lot of other distractions in your life, certainly.
mary rosenblum
But I would take the time to
let your characters wake you up and tell you you got it wrong here...
mary rosenblum
and they want to do this or
that.
mary rosenblum
That will help deepen it.
spider
And pay close attention when the
rejections come back with suggestions. You're that much closer to being
published.
mary rosenblum
Oh, spider, if an editor
comments on a rejection, that editor usually WANTS to publish you.
mary rosenblum
That's a 'you're almost home
free' clue.
greenfaile
Mary? Can you tell me what a
writer's website should look like? Or samples of them? I'm sorry if this is
off-topic. This just because suddenly important to me.
mary rosenblum
Greem, whatever you want.
Generally, fans want to know about you, they want to know where you'll be
appearing if you're...
mary rosenblum
going to be at conferences or
signings...they want to know what you have written and where they can find
it (put in links to amazon.com etc).
lapart
write more than I did this year
mary rosenblum
GREAT resolution, lapart!
mary rosenblum
Easily kept, too.
info
if an editor makes comments on a
rejection, do you assume they want you to revise and resubmit or do you
write them to ask?
mary rosenblum
If an editor tells you
something specific like 'the end didn't work for me'...
mary rosenblum
I would revise the end ( if
that feels right to you!) and resubmit.
mary rosenblum
The editor might not want the
story anyway, but it shows the editor that you CAN make changes.
mary rosenblum
Many writers cannot.
mary rosenblum
If the comment is
general...'just didn't work for me'...
mary rosenblum
then the editor is just
encouraging you with a personal comment...send your next new story there.
greenfaile
To help at least one author
along, and share what I've learned with others. But that's on going.
(thanks Mary)

Super, green.

Mary, this is off-topic...I
looked at the Norwescon website. It says membership is before Dec. 31. Is
that the only fee to attend in April? I can't find any other info
mary rosenblum
Yeah, Jane. That's the only
fee to attend the conference.
mary rosenblum
If you want to put a ms into
the writers workshop that probably costs a few bucks to cover copy charges.
mary rosenblum
That info should be available
on the website.
mary rosenblum
You going to come to it?
mary rosenblum
You're in Tacoma, right?
mary rosenblum
Sigh. I need to update my
website with my 06 conference schedule.
janecj333
I think so. Will I see you
there?
mary rosenblum
Oh yes. I'm one of their
guests and I do the writers workshop, too.
mary rosenblum
The membership fee does not
include your hotel room of course.
mary rosenblum
That' s up to you. :-)
mary rosenblum
That's the real expense at a
con.
