Market Warning: Writers Beware!
Mystery Writers of America
reports that the MWA Contracts, Grievances, and Legislation Committee has received several complaints from authors about Oak Tree Press, Billie Johnson, proprietor (also doing business as Oak Tree Books, Baker Thomas Group, Inc. and Johnson Warren Literary Agency). The complaints have centered on charges for publishing not reflected in the signed contract, unavailability of books for purchase, nonpayment of royalties, failure to reprint stock despite promises, and the assignment of ALL rights in ALL editions to the publisher for a period of five years, a type of contract deemed by the MWA committee as highly unfavorable to authors. Johnson sponsors a yearly, Dark Oak Mystery Contest, with publication as a prize.#####################################################
